Memory
Located beside the historic Foša harbour near the defensive fabric of Zadar’s old urban core, this restaurant renovation respects the memory of the original stone structure by preserving and celebrating its most expressive elements: thick masonry walls, deep window reveals, vaulted openings, and the tactile irregularity of historic surfaces. Rather than concealing age, the design allows it to remain visible, using every mark and texture as part of the spatial identity.
Inserted within this historic shell is a refined contemporary layer of timber, metal, glass, and warm lighting. Dark wood detailing introduces elegance and depth, while sculptural lighting elements bring a modern rhythm to the ceilings and dining zones. The contrast between old stone and carefully crafted new materials creates a dialogue between permanence and change.
The bar area acts as the social heart of the restaurant. Framed by arched shelving and illuminated displays, it recalls classical proportions while functioning as a contemporary focal point. Seating arrangements move between intimate corners, communal tables, and lounge-style zones around the fireplace, allowing the interior to adapt to different moods throughout the day and evening.
Large glazed openings connect the dining rooms with the courtyard terrace, drawing natural light into the interior and extending the experience outdoors. This relationship between enclosed stone rooms and open Mediterranean air reflects the historic character of Foša itself—a meeting point between city walls and sea.
More than a renovation, the project becomes a continuation of place: a new chapter written carefully within walls that have already witnessed centuries of Zadar’s life.
